This is a much more effective and realistic strategy than totally giving up red meat or other foods you enjoy.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Meat servings should be about 3 ounces or less per person. A 3-ounce serving of cooked beef, pork, or lamb is about the size of a deck of cards. The meat from one chicken leg and thigh or from half of a whole breast is approximately 3 ounces.</div>

Prepare more casseroles or mixtures with meat as one of the ingredients, and limit high-fat ingredients such as sour cream or cheese. <div id="_mcePaste">Recent evidence suggests that it is not the seizures but the cause of the seizures that does the brain damage. Status epilepticus can be a consequence of infection of the brain, such as meningitis or encephalitis. It can be a consequence of head trauma, brain tumors, or other serious causes. When status epilepticus is &#8220;symptomatic&#8221;—due to something serious—usually it is the &#8220;something serious&#8221; that does damage to the brain and causes the status epilepticus. It is this symptomatic status that may result in death or permanent brain damage. Whether the seizures themselves cause further damage is much less clear.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Status epilepticus may occur as the first seizure a child experiences and in that case is often the only seizure he ever has. Whether the patient&#8217;s first seizure is status or a brief, generalized, tonic-clonic seizure, most children (70 percent) never have another episode. Although there are many different causes of status epilepticus, in most children the cause remains unknown. When status epilepticus is of unknown cause or is part of a seizure disorder, it rarely causes permanent brain damage.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">There are many causes of status epilepticus; whatever the cause, it is important to stop the prolonged seizures as promptly as possible. It is also crucial to evaluate each child and each episode of status to identify any underlying cause that may require specific treatment.</div>

The diet now recommended for people with diabetes is basically the same as the healthy diet recommended for everyone. It contains about 50 percent carbohydrates (including foods with plenty of natural fiber, such as fruits and whole-grain cereals), about 20 percent proteins, and 30 percent or less fats. People with diabetes should try to avoid refined sugars, such as table sugar, which pass quickly into the blood.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The amount of food that a person with diabetes eats is particularly important, both for those taking insulin and for those being treated with diet alone. There should be enough food to provide nourishment without causing weight gain (except in actively growing children). Obese people need a diet that will help them lose weight, because in Type II diabetes lowering the weight to normal will often decrease or even eliminate the need for any other therapy.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Many people with diabetes go to a dietitian or a nutritionist to help them develop a dietary program. A dietitian may be recommended by a physician or local diabetes group such as the American Diabetes Association.</div>

The diet may allow larger amounts of leafy green vegetables, which are very low in calories and carbohydrates, and high in fiber.</div>

Closing down the nozzle regulates the rate and pressure at which the water flows.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Something similar happens in hypertension. The arterioles tighten down; the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the tissues at a nearly normal rate. This maintains the pressure in the arteries and artioles.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a dangerous ailment because of its effect on the walls of the arteries. It accelerates the ailment of atherosclerosis. <div id="_mcePaste">Tinea versicolor is a misnomer because it is not actually a tinea or dermatophyte. The name pityriasis is more appropriate for this infection, which is caused by Malassezia furfur. Versicolor presents as hypopigmented macules (sometimes hyperpigmented) scattered on the shoulders, upper back, and chest. The macules may be pink, red, light-brown, or white and have a slight scale, which may only be seen after scratching.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The hypopigmentation may only be noted after sun exposure. The macules are sometimes mistaken for vitiligo, but vitiligo is characterized by a complete loss of pigment. Versicolor will fluoresce a gold or orange-brown color under a Wood lamp. KOH preparation of scales reveals non-branching hyphae and clusters of round spores, described as the &#8220;spaghetti-and-meatballs&#8221; pattern.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Pityriasis versicolor responds well to topical therapy with dandruff shampoos containing selenium sulfide (Selsun) or pyrithione zinc (Head &amp; Shoulders). A lather should be applied to the affected skin and left to sit for 10 minutes daily for 1 week. Ketoconazole shampoo is another option that can be used twice weekly for 4 weeks. Topical antifungal agents are also recommended by some practitioners.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Widespread or persistent cases can be treated with oral ketoconazole. Ketoconazole can be given as 200 mg daily for 7 to 10 days. Another option is 400 mg ketoconazole once, and some practitioners consider this the treatment of choice. This should be followed by exercise to induce sweating, and the patient should wait 1 day before showering. This should be repeated in 1 week. Other oral regimens include fluconazole 300 to 400 mg once or itraconazole 400 g daily for 3 to 7 days.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The discoloration of pityriasis versicolor does not resolve immediately following treatment. Normal pigmentation will not return until the skin is exposed to sunlight. Response to treatment is presumed when the scales disappear.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">Respiratory ailments such as sleep apnea are notorious for their role in disturbing sleep. There are two primary types of sleep apnea: obstructive, in which the airways become blocked for one of a number of reasons, and central, in which the physiological mechanisms controlling breathing are disrupted. Sometimes the apnea is a result of both types, and is thus known as mixed apnea. At this point I will briefly discuss those breathing disorders that are specifically associated with DIMS; for the most part these fall into the central sleep apnea category (CSA). However, I want to point out that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a more common problem. Like CSA, OSA can occasionally result in the disorders of maintaining sleep that are the focus of this chapter; more often, however, OSA is manifested as a disorder of excessive sleepiness (DOES).</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Relatively little is known about central sleep apnea. In CSA something—perhaps disruptions in circadian cycles, perhaps some facet of the sleep process itself—causes perturbations in the basic system that drives your breathing cycle. As a result you may cease to breathe temporarily, or your breathing may become too infrequent or too shallow to provide adequate oxygenation of the blood and tissues. As described earlier, your brain will then alert you to awaken in order to overcome the problem. Normally we awaken several times a night anyway, usually at the end of a REM period. With central apnea, however, the arousals are frequent and prevent you from enjoying a good night&#8217;s sleep.</div>
